EASY AMUSEMENT

In the 21st Century, entertainment is easy to come by. One can listen to songs, watch movies, play videogames. Any number of sports and physical activities are available, from bicycling and kayaking to surfing and swimming. Yes, some of these amusements are “hard” and require quite some effort, but they are also some of the most rewarding activities anywhere as well.

But it is the more passive amusements that modern technology is most often associated with. And considering that Americans are working harder than ever – even Western Europeans, too, slowly but surely in these recessionary times – who can blame people for wanting to just sit back and relax on their day off? Many tourists especially are enamored of chaperoned bus rides and the like, and those on group or packaged tours continue to outnumber backpackers and other non-affiliated adventurers.

Thus it is that some of the most successful amusements are the easy, passive ones – rides in particular. For no matter how convenient even group tours can be, even group tours will require a good amount of walking and standing. And so it is that such rides are welcome relief to tired feet and, one can reasonably imagine, a significant factor in these rides’ enduring popularity.

And thus also such rides have come to cater especially to large groups, with group discounts and like offers. Often, these rides are situated near or even at famous landmarks, just the sort visited by groups and groups of tourists, such as the New York Skyride and Sydney Oztrek of serial entrepreneur Zalman Silber. These rides combine all the passivity of a movie-going experience (indeed, the programs are but video footage of helicopter fly-bys over famous landmarks) with a bit of hi-tech excitement in the form of moving platforms that are kinetically synchronized with events onscreen. Such rides are great for families, with content that is suitable for all ages and likely to interest all as well, though very young children are sometimes not allowed for safety reasons.

In a city like New York, however, one of the easiest forms of amusement is to simply take public transportation. It’s a one-fare town, after, for the most part (specifically where the subways are concerned), and a one-day “fun pass” or a one-week “unlimited” MetroCard can provide many hours of amusement. Simply hop on board a bus and see where it takes you! It’s almost impossible to be lost in Manhattan, especially all the popular touristy areas, due to the city’s grid-pattern layout and numerous numerical street signages.
